Vocations

Has God stopped Calling?

No, more accurately, with all that the world has to offer, we get distracted and rather than a shortage of calls, we run into the problem of a shortage of young people willing to listen to the call.

The Office of Vocations for the Diocese of Salina has as its main purpose to help young people…

  • Realize they each have a unique vocation (calling).
  • Recognize that true happiness in life comes through answering God’s call.
  • Give them tools to find and follow their Vocation.

Novena for Vocations PDF Print E-mail

The Seminarians of the Diocese of Salina are requesting the people of the diocese to join them in praying a special Novena for vocations in the diocese.  Between the dates of January 25, 2011 (the conversion of St. Paul) to February 2, 2011 (the Presentation of the Lord), the seminarians will be praying the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the patroness of the Diocese of Salina. They ask that you, your families and friends that are able and willing, pray this with them.

Kyle Berens, a second year Pre-Theology seminarian at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis says, "Let us barrage the gates of heaven with prayers to our Blessed Mother and ask her to inspire in the hearts of men in our diocese the grace of their vocation to the priesthood."

The seminarians wish to thank everyone for the hard work and prayers that are done on their behalf.  A hard copy version of the Novena can be downloaded by clicking here.

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Oh Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke your powerful name, the protection of the living and the salvation of the dying. Purest Mary, let your name henceforth be ever on my lips. Delay not, Blessed Lady, to rescue me whenever I call on you. In my temptations, in my needs, I will never cease to call on you, ever repeating your sacred name, Mary, Mary. What a consolation, what sweetness, what confidence fills my soul when I utter your sacred name or even only think of you! I thank the Lord for having given you so sweet, so powerful, so lovely a name. But I will not be content with merely uttering your name. Let my love for you prompt me ever to hail you Mother of Perpetual Help. Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for me and grant me the favor I confidently ask of you.  ( for 5 new seminarians to enter this fall )

(Then say three Hail Mary’s).

Heavenly Father,
bless our diocese with the grace
of many vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,
grant to those you have called
the willingness and generosity of spirit
to give themselves in devoting their lives and their talents
to the service of our Lord and to his Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese,
and particularly the faith of those
you have called and will continue to call
to serve your people.
Help each of us be good stewards
of the gift of our vocation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen

National Vocation Awareness Week PDF Print E-mail

Why do we assume that God is not actively working in people’s lives…and furthermore that God could not possibly use us as his messengers to others?  This week from January 10-15 is National Vocation Awareness week.  What better a time to practice a little evangelization; to practice being God’s messengers in the lives of those who most need to hear His voice?  Think about it.  What if you are supposed to be the “one person” that makes an impact in someone’s life; that one person that a future priest in our diocese will mention again and again as he tells his own story of God’s action in his life?  Who is the young man you know who just needs a little nudge from his friend or family member?  Step out on the ledge and be God’s messenger this week.

This simple motto claimed by Bishop Coakley, describes the truth of living a life completely committed to Christ in Today’s world.  It is a commitment that is unknown, seemingly dark, and full of difficult demands, but Jesus Christ commands us, “Do not be Afraid!”

“I would like to ask each one of you: What will you do with your life?  What are your plans?  Have you ever thought of committing your existence totally to Christ?  Do you think that there can be anything greater than to bring Jesus to people and people to Jesus?”  - Pope John Paul II on The Meaning of Vocation
