Bishop's Office
All Saints: This Sunday, November 1st, we have the wonderful opportunity to celebrate All Saints. As Pope Francis reminds us, “To be saints is not a privilege for the few, but a vocation for everyone.”Hallow-eve: I hope everyone enjoys the candy they receive on Halloween night. Hallow, of course, means “to make holy.” It’s good to celebrate the “eve” of All Saints Day too.
Hallow: Speaking of hallow, there are plenty of great Catholic apps out there. From what people tell me, the Hallow app is one of the best.
All Souls: November is the month to pray for the deceased. Burying the dead is a corporal work of mercy, although the practice isn’t solely about burying a dead person. It also encompasses praying for the dead, including attending their funerals and visiting their graves.
All Souls II: We are most united with our loved ones who have gone before us at the celebration of Mass. Please find out when your parish is having Masses on November 2nd and pray for those who have gone before us.
Catholic Charities: This past week, I blessed a new site for Catholic Charities in Concordia. The name of the building was previously called Neighbor to Neighbor and was run by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Catholic Charities keeps on expanding their services to the poor in need. What a blessing!
Appeal: Last weekend was the Catholic Charities appeal Igniting Hope. You can still give by clicking HERE. When I blessed the new building for Catholic Charities, a man who serves in mental health services told me that the Catholic Charities is out in front of helping others, especially with food. Thank you for your support of Catholic Charities.
Correctional Facility: Last week, I attended the Kolbe Prison Ministry retreat at the Correctional Facility in Norton. Fr. Joshua Werth, Deacon Dan Wahlmeier, and several other volunteers beautifully accompanied the men. I am so thankful for them! They are fulfilling the corporal work of mercy of visiting the imprisoned.
Fire: Wow, the Holy Fire retreat for middle school students has an incredible list of speakers and performers. I hope our middle school students throughout our diocese will be able to attend. It’s at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Hays on Saturday, November 7, from 10 am – 5 pm.
CYO: Another great youth event is the 2026 CYO Convention, November 14-15, in Salina. Please encourage your high school students to attend. Recently, when I asked couples at the anniversary Mass how they met one couple said it was at CYO. You never know!
Women’s Retreat: Are you or do you know a single woman aged 18-40 looking for a retreat experience designed just for you? Heart of the Bridegroommay be just what you’re looking for. A retreat for single women in the Diocese of Salina will be held at IHM Church in Hays, 10AM to 5 PM on November 7th. The registration deadline is TODAY, October 30th! Register HERE, and I hope to see you there!
Cor Jesu Retreats: The first spiritual exercises retreat offered by the Cor Jesu Apostolate in the Diocese of Salina will be held this weekend in Victoria. Please pray for the women who will be there. The second retreat in our diocese will be for Men at the same location December 11-13. Learn more about the Apostolate and register HERE.
Hispanic Conference: For the first time, the diocese is hosting a Hispanic Catholic Conference, Jesus Heals: An Encounter of Healing and Hope. It takes place from December 4 – 6 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. The entire conference will be in Spanish and is an opportunity for our Hispanic Catholic community from across the Diocese to come together in faith, formation, prayer, and fellowship.
Hunters: A priest friend of mine and his brother from Michigan are coming to Kansas once again to hunt deer in November. I always hope they get a big buck!
Faithful Citizenship: Please don’t forget to vote. It’s a duty that we should follow through with. Saying that, I think all of us are tired of the terrible campaign advertisements. I discussed this with three priests from different countries serving in our diocese. They all said that the political scene is much worse in their country. Very sad! Whoever is elected, we need to make sure that Jesus is our King and the center of our lives.School: I’ve had the joy of visiting many of our Catholic schools the past couple of weeks. I’ve said this many times—there is a lot of love, joy and peace there.
Sports teams: Speaking of our schools, many of our public schools and Catholic schools are participating in postseason sports. Blessings on all our teams.
SGO: Did you know you can help make Catholic education accessible to more families and qualify for a 75% Kansas income-tax credit through the Diocese of Salina’s Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO)? Click HERE to learn more!
#iGiveCatholic: Each year, Catholics come together through #iGiveCatholic to give thanks and give back to the parishes, schools, and ministries that mean so much to them. I am grateful for the many ways these gifts help people encounter the love of Jesus throughout our diocese. Please visit salina.igivecatholic.org November 16 through December 1 to give to a participating parish, school, or ministry close to your heart.
Thanksgiving: I hope all of you enjoy Thanksgiving with your family by eating a good meal, resting, watching football, and giving thanks to God for filling us with every blessing in the heavens.
Fall back: Just a reminder that time change happens at 2 am on October 31. It will be nice to get an extra hour of sleep!
Inspiration from the Saints: “What saint has ever won his crown without first contending for it? – St. Jerome
“Let us become saints so that after having been together on earth, we may be together in Heaven.” – St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio)
“After seven years in the religious life, I still am weak and imperfect. I always feel, however, the same bold confidence of becoming a great saint because I don’t count on my merits since I have none, but I trust in Him who is Virtue and Holiness.” – St. Therese of Lisieux
“One should not wish to become a saint in four days but step by step.” – St. Philip Neri
“A saint was once asked, while playing happily with his companions, what he would do if any angel told him that in a quarter of an hour he would die and have to appear before the judgment seat of God. The saint properly replied that he would continue playing because I am certain these games are pleasing to God.” – St. John Bosco
“The saints are like the stars. In his providence Christ conceals them in a hidden place that they may not shine before others when they might wish to do so. Yet they are always ready to exchange the quiet of contemplation for the works of mercy as soon as they perceive in their heart the invitation of Christ.:” – St. Anthony of Padua
