As we near the end of the first quarter, I am grateful for the families whose partnership sustains our Catholic schools through this busy season. Fall sports are winding down, high school teams are preparing for postseason play, and junior high students are turning their attention to winter sports. Teachers are reviewing student progress and adjusting lessons to meet learners’ needs. School leaders are also preparing to bring Hallow to families and keeping a close eye on the Kansas State Tax Credit as it approaches its cap.
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us to “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” The coin bears Caesar’s image, but each of us is made in the image of God. Family life is often where children first learn to offer their time, gifts, and care in service to God and one another.
Families can nurture that spirit of faith by helping young people grow in prayer. Bishop Vincke’s In His Presence Campaign invites teenagers to spend one hour each week in Eucharistic Adoration. This time with Jesus can help young people grow in faith and deepen their relationship with him. I encourage you to talk with your teen about how your family can make this weekly hour possible.
Thank you for the many ways you partner with our schools: communicating with teachers, attending Sunday Mass as a family, sharing the values we teach, and helping make our communities welcoming places for every student. Your partnership is also visible in everyday acts of service, such as helping in the cafeteria, working a game or concession stand, driving for an activity, volunteering at an event, or serving on a school or parish council.
Every contribution matters. These acts help our schools and parishes thrive, and they show our children that faith is lived through generosity, responsibility, and care for others.
As the school year continues at full speed, our parishes and schools need more families to share in this work. A familiar group of people can sometimes end up carrying much of it. If you are able, please step forward to help and invite another family to join you. A personal invitation can make it easier for someone to take that first step and feel part of the community.
Thank you for all you do for our children, our parishes, and our schools. When families, parishes, and educators walk together, we help young people grow in faith, learning, and service.
