Diocesan Pastoral Plan

Bishop Paul S. Coakley established a Diocesan Planning Commission early in 2008, charging it to develop a Strategic Pastoral Plan embodying his vision for the diocese’s future.  This Plan, entitled Stewards of Hope, will be promulgated at a special Diocesan Assembly on June 6, 2010, the Feast of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ).

Bishop Coakley chose this date because the clergy, religious and people of the Diocese of Salina form the Body of Christ, the Catholic community of faith, in north central and northwest Kansas.  Therefore, as the Preamble to Stewards of Hope says, “we treat one another as members of the Body of Christ, as brothers and sisters....  We strive always to be one in faith, one in hope, one in Christian charity.”

The Diocesan Planning Commission, established by Bishop Coakley early in 2008, completed its task in Russell, Kansas on February 19, 2010 after nearly two years of meetings, consultations, and revisions.  The final product is the fifth and final draft of Stewards of Hope: A Pastoral Plan for the Diocese of Salina. It can be found in the documents box on the left side of this page.

The next phase is implementation.  A diocesan assembly is planned for June 6, 2010 (Feast of Corpus Christi) at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas to inaugurate the pastoral plan and begin implementation.  The assembly begins at 1:00 and includes music, motivational speakers, spiritual talks, a Eucharistic procession, and Mass at the new Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.  The Mass will be followed by ethnic food booths (German, Mexican, Czech, Vietnamese, and American) prepared by various parish communities in the diocese.  Implementation will follow.

In March 2010, Bishop Coakley established a Diocesan Implementation Committee to oversee implementation.  Behind the scenes work will begin immediately and continue after the Diocesan Assembly until the end of the year.  Public implementation in the diocese and parishes will be initiated at the beginning of 2011.

Bishop Coakley's Expectations for the Pastoral Planning process. PDF Print E-mail

On Friday May 8, 2009, Bishop Coakley released a video that details his hopes and expectations for the current ongoing Pastoral Planning process for the Diocese of Salina.  Each parish in the diocese is to show the video to its parishioners over the next two weekends.  The video is also available for viewing on the diocesan YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/SalinaDiocese.  A Spanish translation of the video transcript is available on the Bishop's Official Statements page.

The purpose of the video is to explain what has already been accomplished by the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Commission, as well as what actions are still left to be undertaken.  It is also the Bishop's desire that all members of the diocese become engaged in this process as an act of stewardship in determining the diocese's pastoral priorities.
