Dear Pilgrims & Potential Pilgrims:
As you know from earlier correspondence, our Trip to Canada is set for Oct. 1 - 6, 2010. You will note that the insurance is an extra 115.00 or 172.50 for the "cancel for any reason" insurance. Insurance is strongly recommended and we have found that it's better to get the "cancel for any reason", especially if there's a chance that you may have to back out.
At present the following have indicated an intention to be a part of our group:
Betty Salzman & Gina Moore; Sherry Headlee & Mary Dolan; Jack & Deb Wickersham; Kathy Martin & JoAnne Balthazor; Bernita Ginther & Doris Short; Glen & Ruth Saffer; Ilene Hart & Catherine Newland; Dennis & Janice Burdick; Carmelita Johnson; Sheryl Rauch & LaVaughn Lauby. Hopefully we will also have with us: Jeff, Monica & Adelaid Easter; and Ivan & Janet Weber. If you know of others, please let me know or have them get in touch with me.
At this time Select International needs a $500.00 deposit from each of us. Also this would be the time to take out the insurance for the trip for those who intend to purchase it - see info below. Both the deposit and the insurance cost may be sent to me and (as in the past) I will send one check to Select International. Please send two separate checks made out to me – one for the deposit and one for the insurance. It’s important that each check carry the same date and it would be good to mark them “deposit for trip” and “insurance for trip”. I believe the reason for this is that the insurance kicks in at the time of the first deposit. Let me know if you have any questions.
ALSO, IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN ONE OF OUR RECENT TRIPS, OR IF YOU HAVE GOTTEN A NEW PASSPORT, I WILL NEED YOUR FULL PASSPORT INFO – full name exactly as it appears on the passport, date the passport was issued & passport number.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Fr. Hake
Pilgrimage to Canadian Shrines – Oct. 1 – 6, 2010
Since the early days of New France in the 17th century, religion and public demonstrations of faith have been an integral part of the outlook, character and lifestyles of French Canada. The conversion of the Amerindians and the spread of the Catholic faith throughout America played an important role in the growth of this initially French and later British colony. Today, numerous places of worship stand as evidence of Quebec’s centuries-old tradition and this tour will give you a good overview of its religious and cultural heritage.

Designed in 1824 by James O'Donnell, an Irish-American Protestant architect from New York, the architect was so moved by the experience that he converted to Catholicism. Visitors to the basilica today can understand the impact
You'll also visit Cathedral-Basilica of Mary, Queen of the World. Churches and religion have been a part of Montreal right from the start. The city was founded in 1642 as a mission to convert the Amerindians. In the afternoon: dedicated to the discovery of the St. Joseph Oratory and to Brother Andre Bessette

St. Joseph's Oratory is a great basilica with a giant copper dome built in honor of St. Joseph, patron saint of Canada, of a Happy Home, and Protector of Families and Children. The massive edifice, high on the slopes of Mount Royal, belies its simple origins as the dream of a humble lay brother named Brother André.
Brother Andre was born in 1845 outside Montreal. His parents died when he was a child. In his late teens, uneducated, he traveled to New England to work in the textile mills. After returning to Canada, he joined the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal. In 1874, he worked as a porter and barber at a boys school run by the order, and it was there that his reputation as a healer and miracle-worker took hold. His dream was to build a shrine to St. Joseph on the side of Montreal's Mount Royal.
He started with a tiny chapel in 1904, which over the years grew to become the giant landmark church that now towers over the city. Brother André was laid to rest there when he died in 1937 at the age of 91. His heart is stored in a reliquary inside the Oratory and is an object of contemplation for pilgrims.
Brother André lived his life with great humility. Guided by a deep faith and devotion to Saint Joseph, he dedicated his life to praying, serving the poor, welcoming strangers, healing the sick and comforting the suffering. He was declared Venerable on June 1978 by Pope Paul VI and was beatified on May 23, 1982 by Pope John Paul II. Evening dinner downtown. Overnight in Montreal.
